Rooney’s goals lift Vikes to win

By Becky Walz,

Thursday’s match between the Decorah girls’ soccer team (5-3) and Union (2-6) was a tale of two halves as the Vikings dominated the first and the Knights took control of the second. When the clock rang out for the final time it was Decorah winning 2-0.
Decorah made enough headway in the first half to prevail on two Clara Rooney goals.  The first came after a beautiful cross by Kaia Neal that deflected to a wide-open Rooney in front of the net who blasted it home for the early lead.  The second came after Abby Milburn controlled the ball in the corner. Milburn passed to Rooney, who then made a quick move to beat her defender to the post, planting the ball in the opposite upper corner for a goal.
The second half saw Decorah fending off attack after attack.
“Our defense held firm and Grace Bachelder made all the saves she needed to,” said Coach Loren Hendrickson. “The disappointment was we just couldn’t keep possession. Time and again, we gave the ball away cheaply, leading to multiple attacks by Union. We’ll need to fix that for future games.”
The Vikes are back on the pitch Thursday, May 13 at West Delaware at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 15, Decorah will compete in a tournament at Waverly-Shell Rock beginning at 9 a.m.
