State bid wrenched away by Xavier

Decorah fans streamed into the gym early Monday night full of excitement and left in eerie silence after Xavier bounced back from a 14-point halftime deficit to defeat the Viking boys’ basketball team in the substate final in overtime.
It marks the eighth time the Saints have qualified for the Class 3A state tournament, leaving Viking fans with discontent.

The Luther College cheer echoed across the darkened hardwood of the Regents Center gymnasium Saturday night. Fans, alumni and staff gathered on the historic court, following the final basketball games of the regular season to hear from former coaches and former student athletes before crews begin renovating the gym as part of a $24 million building update. The renovated complex is to be named the Gerdin Fieldhouse for Athletics and Wellness.

There was excitement on the mats last week for the 100th Annual boys state wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines as nine area wrestlers competed for titles.
Representing Decorah, six grapplers faced the fierce competition with a trio climbing the podium while South Winn had one matman on the stand Saturday night.

No. 2 Vikes roll into semifinal

After defeating Mason City in its final regular season contest, the Class 3A No. 2 Decorah boys basketball team (21-1) took the first step toward a return trip to the state tournament Monday night, for as the Vikes defeated Clinton in the Substate quarterfinal, 88-69.
The Vikings now host Independence (10-13) tonight at 7 p.m. (Thursday, Feb. 27). A win in the semifinal round will push Decorah into the substate final against either Xavier (13-9) and Wahlert Catholic (13-9) at 7 p.m. Monday, March 3 at home.

Viking girls end year 11-12 at Xavier Saturday

The season came to an end for the Decorah girls basketball team Saturday as the Vikings fell to Xavier 86-35 in the Class 4A Region 8 semifinals.
Decorah ends the year 11-12 overall as the final team to win the Northeast Iowa Conference title as the long-standing league gets set to dissolve later this year.

A stellar wrestling season wrapped up for girls around the state last weekend in Coralville, including five Vikings with one in the finals.
Heading into the big meet, Decorah was looking to defend its state title; however, the Vikes would come up short of a trophy, finishing third with 74 points. East Buchanan tallied 105 points to win the Class 1A title, followed by Mount Vernon and Osage.
