Decorah girls have five crowned champs at Anamosa

The Decorah girls’ wrestling team rebounded from a close conference dual loss Thursday to finish second at Anamosa Saturday, crowning five grapplers as champions.

Back on the mats Thursday, the Vikings came up short in a conference dual with Waverly-Shell Rock falling 42-33 at home.
Decorah picked up five wins and a forfeit against the Go-Hawks.
At 100 pounds, Chloe Sheffield threw Amber Hoth in 4:50. Then Ellie Adams was on the right side of a 5-2 decision against Addison Buseman at 115 pounds. Ana Simon needed just 1:49 to record a fall over Kasey Stone at a 145 pounds. At 155 pounds, Lauren Luzum put Evie Wagner on her back in 3:00 and Naomi Simon turned Ava Soesbe in 1:31 at 190 pounds. At 140 pounds, Amelia Wadsworth received a forfeit.

Anamosa tourney
Nine points separated the Vikes from the title Saturday at the Anamosa tournament. Cedar Falls won the team title with 229, while Decorah came in second with 220, followed by East Buchanan with 192.
Five Decorah grapplers climbed to the top of the podium, including Sheffield (100), Wadsworth (140), A. Simon (145), Luzum (155) and N. Simon (170).
Sheffield put up the winning effort that began with a 10-second pin over AnnMarie Morgan of Mt. Vernon in the opening round. In 1:34, the Vikings threw Elizabeth Burns of Cedar Rapids Prairie in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinal match against Natalie Blake of Cedar Falls. In her next-to-last match, Sheffield turned Blake in 5:57. In the finals, she picked up her fourth fall of the day in 1:21 over Solon’s Kara VeDepo.
The second champion crowned was Wadsworth with four falls. In 2:40, she turned Irelan Brown of Center Point-Urbana before pinning Bettendorf’s Izzy Giza in the quarterfinals in 5:11. Wadsworth then threw Andelyn Cabalka of East Buchanan in 3:19 to advance to the finals. There the Viking earned the title with a fall recorded in 2:59 over Adeline Whisner of Mt. Vernon.
Sophomore A. Simon pinned her way to the finals and capped off the day with a decision for the 145-pound title. In round one, she took just 15 seconds to throw Dakota Pederson of Iowa Valley. She followed it up with a fall in 3:23 over Haylee Karr of Vinton-Shellsburg in the quarterfinals. Putting the shoulders of Emerson Bartlett of Cedar Falls on the mat in 1:43, put the Viking in the finals against Tayla Stiefel of East Buchanan. In her only match to go all three periods, A. Simon won the final by a 7-1 decision.
Luzum won her four matches by fall Saturday for the championship at 155 pounds. In 26 seconds, the sophomore pinned Clair Priebe of Independence. In the quarterfinal match against Shaona Emmanuel of City High, the Viking threw 3:06. Facing Cedar Falls’ Macie Graves in the semifinal, Luzum turned her opponent in 3:45. In the final against Miley Walz, the Decorah grappler pinned her way to the top of podium in 3:08.
With none of her four matches reaching the second period, top-ranked N. Simon won at 170-pounds. She threw Rylee Froh of Bettendorf in 36 seconds. In the quarterfinals, the senior put Camryn Cothrell of Cedar Rapids Prairie on her back in 1:33. It was a fall in 42 seconds in the semifinal against Raelene Hawkins of Iowa Valley. Independence’s Izzy Strickert fell to N. Simon in the finals in 1:40.
