Todd E. Schmauss

Todd E. Schmauss, 35, of Decorah, formerly of Cresco, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 2015, at Regional Health Services of Howard County. Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at First Congregational Church (130 3rd Ave. East) in Cresco, with Pastor Tim Sir and Father Dennis Cain presiding. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home 404 N Elm Street Cresco. Visitation continues at 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday, at the church.

Todd Eugene Schmauss was born May 17, 1980, in Cresco, son of John and Nancy (Schoeberl) Schmauss. In 1998, Todd graduated from Crestwood High School. He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in fitness management from Upper Iowa University. While attending Iowa Central he was a junior college wrestling All American. After college Todd played semi-pro football with the Rochester Giants. Todd was the owner and operator of The Mat in Decorah. He trained extensively and won the Midwest MMA heavyweight title. Todd had a heart of gold and a great sense of humor. His true passion in life was coaching and inspiring area youth and young adults to see the potential in themselves. Todd enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. Todd married Kimberly Johnson July 2, 2011, in Cresco. Todd cherished his wife Kim and her three children.

Surviving Todd is his wife, Kim, of Decorah, and her children: Stella, Greta, and Gus; his parents, John and Nancy Schmauss of Cresco; two brothers, Thomas (Laura) Schmauss of Cresco, and their children Mitchell and Carter; and Brady (Megan) Schmauss of Denver; father- and mother-in-law, Larry and Sharon Johnson of Decorah; brothers-in-law: Jason (Heather) Johnson of Dorchester, Chad Johnson of Waukon, Jeremiah Johnson of Decorah; sister-in-law Ashley (Justin) Ahlstrom of Waukon; grandmother-in-law Sylvia Marti of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Todd in death were his paternal grandparents, Francis and Bernice Schmauss; and maternal grandparents, Eugene and Elsie Schoeberl.
