Roselyn A. Shimek, 88, of Cresco, passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015, at the Patty Elwood Center in Cresco. Mass of Christian Burial is at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Lourdes. Burial is in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home 404 N Elm Street Cresco, with a scripture service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation continues an hour prior to the time of service Wednesday at the church.
Roselyn Ann Bohr was born May 28, 1927, on a farm near Ossian, the daughter and sixth child of 14 children of Anton J. and Mary E. (Imholte) Bohr. She attended various grade schools in the New Hampton area, graduating from Assumption High School in Cresco in 1945. After graduating from high school, she attended Upper Iowa University receiving her teaching certificate. She taught at Howard County No. 7 school from 1946-1954. Roselyn was united in marriage to Clarence Shimek Aug. 9, 1948, in Lourdes. Together the couple farmed east of Lourdes most of their married life. She was also a housewife. Roselyn taught CCD at Lourdes for many years and worked at the Tower Club and the Cresco Care Center. She had a strong work ethic that was passed down to her children. Roselyn was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Rosary Society, Howard County Rural Teachers Association, and was a 4-H leader. She enjoyed gardening and growing her zinnias and marigolds. She shared her garden bounty with family and friends.
Roselyn is survived by her children: Mary Pat Shimek of Decorah, Jeanene (Ed) Breitenstein of Keokuk, Anne (Jim) Ott of Cresco, Tom (Bobbie) Shimek of Riceville, Jayne (Myron) Lupkes of Joice, John (Mary) Shimek of Ridgeway and Peter (Randi) Shimek of Cresco; grandchildren: Daniel Breitenstein, Beth Nickel, Amy Ott-Maramba, Andy Ott, Justin, Eric, and Chelsie Shimek, Nick Lupkes, Jackie Sorenson, Tim Shimek, Dr. Amber McCarville and Chris and Gregory Shimek; step-grandchildren, Sierra and Shanae Burgart; 14 great-grandchildren: Jillian, Leah, Abbey, Cody, Dalton, Drew, Morgan, Addie, Hudson, Lucas, Addie, Bria, Adrianne and baby Shimek; and nieces and nephews. She also is survived by brothers, Norbert (Diane) Bohr of Decorah and Al Bohr of Rochester, Minn.; sister, Jeanette Heintz of Washburn; brother-in-law, Joe Bouska of Charles City; sisters-in-law, Elva Shimek of Protivin and Marian Gehling of Albert Lea, Minn.; and brother-in-law, Cletus Shimek of Charles City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Mary; husband, Clarence; brothers: Gregory, Harold, Raymond and Francis Bohr; sisters: Helen DeVries, Joan Lemming, Sister Eileen Bohr, Margie John, Mary Jean Parthum, Rose Ann Smith Bouska; and several nieces and nephews.
