Rev. Robert Shapard Hupp

Rev. Robert Shapard Hupp, 62, of Wellman, formerly of Postville, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, at University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City. Visitation was Saturday, Dec. 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville. Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Postville, helped the family with the arrangements.
He was born Jan. 5, 1953, to Charles Thorton and Mary Elizabeth (Ratz) Hupp in Salisbury, N.C. Robert graduated from Davie County High School in 1971. He received his bachelor’s degree from High Point College in North Carolina and his master’s of divinity from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. Robert was united in marriage with Sandra Lynn Sheppard May 20, 1977. Two children were born to this union, Jason and Carrie. Robert and Sandra were later divorced. Robert was a police office for 14 years in Lexington, N.C. He also served as a minister for many churches including: parishes in Ft. Hope, Ontario; Finland, Minn.; five small parishes in northern West Virginia; St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville; and Cresco. He was a founder of KPVL radio station in Postville and enjoyed leading the St. Paul youth group on whitewater rafting adventures. Following his parish in Cresco, Robert moved back to North Carolina to take care of his mother. At the end of July of this year, he moved back to Iowa and lived with his daughter and son-in-law in Wellman on his journey to seek a new parish in British Columbia. Robert was a private pilot; he loved to fly the open skies and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He was also a Freemason. Robert enjoyed playing bagpipes, dog sledding (keeping his own mini-sled dog team of three huskies), collecting and shooting antique guns, HAM radio, woodworking, antique tools, collecting and restoring antique lamps, making dulcimers, fly fishing and enjoying the outdoors.
Robert is survived by his son, Jason (Karen) Hupp of Lincoln, Neb.; his daughter, Carrie (Joshua) Geno of Wellman; and three grandchildren: Rowen Hupp, Laurelin Geno and Gabrielle Geno.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents.
