Nancy Macal

Nancy Macal, 74, of Decorah, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, at the Gunderson Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis. Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Decorah Lutheran Church, with Rev. Dave Sorenson officiating. Organist was Kathy Murray. Soloist was Mitch Cornelius (“Here I Am, Lord).” Hymns were “On Eagles Wings” and “How Great Thou Art.” Casket bearers were Mitch Cornelius, Marty Cornelius, Shelby Cornelius, Tyler Macal, Brian Bolson and Lance Bolson. Interment was at Freeport Cemetery in Decorah. Arrangements were handled by Schluter Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Nancy Lee (Harkness) Macal was born May 26, 1942, in Spring Grove, Minn., the daughter of Claude and Josie (McCallson) Harkness. She attended Mabel Public School. She was united in marriage to Melvin Macal in Preston, Minn. Dec. 20, 1958. Nancy was employed at Deco Products in Decorah for several years. She worked as an in-home daycare provider, and worked with her daughter, Sue, providing daycare; she also worked at Little Bulldog Daycare in Monona. She and Melvin also farmed for many years in rural Decorah. Nancy and Melvin have lived near Hesper for the past two years. They enjoyed fishing together spending time with friends and family. Nancy also loved her poodle, “Mojo”; cooking, baking, coloring and gardening. She was a member of the Decorah Lutheran Church.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Melvin Macal, Decorah; three children: Laura (Lance) Bolson, St. Michael Minn., Sue (Tony) Charley, Waterloo and Mark (Karen) Macal, Forest Lake, Minn.; eight grandchildren: Mitch (Lauren) Cornelius, Marty Cornelius, Shelby Cornelius, Tyler Macal, Lindsie Macal, Emily Macal, Melanie Bolson and Brian Bolson; great-granddaughter, Rori Cornelius; sister, Rose Marie Grosser, Azusa, Calif.; sister-in-law, Ethel Harkness, Central City.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Josie (McCallson) Harkness; brothers, Robert (Eleanore) Harkness and Merle Harkness; brother-in-law, James Grosser; and mother-in-law, Myrtle Macal.
