Mark D. Werden, 63, of Decorah, died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015, as a result of injuries received in an auto accident. Friends greeted his family from 10 a.m. until noon Friday, Aug. 21, at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon. Graveside services were at 3 p.m. Friday, at Buckhorn Cemetery in Maquoketa.

Mark Douglas Werden was born Feb. 6, 1952, in Waverly, the son of Charles A. and Virginia Esther (McPherson) Werden. The Werden family lived in Maynard in the 1950s and moved to Waukon in 1961. Later they moved to Marshall, Mo., where Mark graduated from Marshall High School in 1971. Later that year he moved to Fayette, where he operated Werden’s Department Store for many years. Mark also enjoyed working with his mother at Stepps Melon Stands in the Fayette area for a number of years. Mark enjoyed sports of all kinds and was a particularly talented baseball player when he was younger. Mark had a heart of gold and, although he never married, he enjoyed being with people. He was an active worker with NAMI Iowa (National Alliance on Mental Illness), where in recent years he spent much of his time trying to help those less fortunate as a home health aid. He loved telling jokes and going dancing as well as spending many fun times with his nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his siblings: Vicki (Roger) Sinclair of Laurie, Mo., Faye (Gary) Nolting of Waukon and Bruce Werden of Maynard; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gail Sue; a nephew, Todd Nolting; and a grandnephew, Cade Nolting.
