Marion R. “Rosie” Thompson, 86, of Waterloo, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, at her home.
She was born Feb. 17, 1928, in Decorah, the daughter of David P. and Ann Tinjum Mitchell. Rosie was united in marriage with Robert S. Thompson Aug. 4, 1949, in Waterloo. He preceded her in death Nov. 28, 2002. Rosie was employed in several places including the Decorah Hatchery, Woolworth’s Dime Store and Hinson Manufacturing. For many years she cared for her husband who was stricken with multiple sclerosis. She also served as the publicity chairwoman for the Multiple Sclerosis Society from 1961-1968. Rosie was a member of the Whittier School PTA and was an accomplished bowler who played in a number of leagues over the years.
Survivors include three daughters: Rebecca (Marty) McIntire of Greendale, Wis., Barbara (Rick) Thorne of Cedar Falls and Loretta (Jim) Sobczak of Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren plus one on the way; and a brother-in-law, Carl Leavell, of Waterloo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a granddaughter, Kelly Marie McIntire; a sister, Betty Leavell and a brother, Charles Mitchell.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at Katharine Graham Pahl Chapel at Memorial Park Cemetery, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation was noon until the services Saturday at the Cemetery Chapel. Kearns Funeral Service Kimball Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the family.
