Kathy Sue Haugen

Kathy Sue Haugen (Mrs. Steve Haugen), 63, of Decorah, passed away July 16, 2016, at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, after a long illness. Services are at 11 a.m., Friday, July 22, at First Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Rev. Richard Simon Hanson officiating. Interment is at Union Prairie Cemetery, Decorah. Organist is Marcia Engebretson. Soloist is Kimberly Ball (“On Eagles’ Wings”). Hymns are “Amazing Grace, “O God, Our Help In Ages Past” and “Jesus Loves Me!” Arrangements are being handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, Decorah.

Kathy Sue Maschmann was born Sept. 15, 1952, to Harvey and Gwen (Robinson) Maschmann of Millersburg. She graduated in 1971 from Deep River- Millersburg High School in Deep River. In 1976, she was united in marriage to Everett Hemrich. The couple later moved from the Millersburg area to rural Riceville, where she was a homemaker. To this union three children were born: Scott, Samantha and Sonya.

She later worked at the Riceville nursing home and did daycare out of her home. After Everett died in 1989, she met and married Steve Haugen of Decorah, Dec. 23, 1995. They made their home in the rural Ridgeway area for a number of years before moving to the Haugen family farm near Decorah. Kathy was employed with the Cresco Shopper in Cresco and worked for the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah for 15 years.

Kathy was an animal lover (especially her little dogs). She enjoyed riding horses when she was younger. She also enjoyed bird watching, and gardening. Kathy loved Elvis Presley and enjoyed spending time with her friends Margo, Dorothy, Mary, Connie and Barb. She also enjoyed riding with Steve on trips in his semi. She will always be remembered for making delicious apple pies and apple sauce.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Steve Haugen, Decorah; her children: Scott Hemrich, Ridgeway; Samantha Hemrich of Austin, Texas; and Sonya (Steve) Meyerhofer, Grand Meadow, Minn.; her stepchildren: Stephanie Haugen, Decorah; Sara Haugen, Decorah; and Scott (Alison) Haugen, Gilbert, Ariz.; grandchildren: Colton, Wyatt and Baby boy Meyerhofer, Hope Haugen, Callie Edie, Steven and John Baldridge, Elliot, Aiden and Mae Haugen; her mother, Gwen Maschmann, Millersburg; two brothers, John (Marojie) Maschmann, Clinton and Ron (Sherrie) Maschmann, Millersburg; two brothers-in-law, Ron (Rossana) Haugen, El Paso, Texas and Dave (Jan) Haugen, Indianola; along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Everett Hemrich, April 5, 1989; her father: Harvey Maschmann. Two brothers: Larry and Dennis Maschmann. Her father-in-law and mother-in-law: Norman and Darlene Haugen.
