Darvin Lee Hacker of Decorah, passed away on Aug. 20, 2022, at his residence, Wellington Place after a long illness.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 29, at the First Lutheran Church, 604 W Broadway St., in Decorah with Rev. Michael Wilker presiding. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28, at the Helms Funeral Home, 604 South Ave in Decorah and also after 10 a.m. at the church on Monday morning.

Darvin was born on June 2, 1933, in Havelock, Iowa. He attended Havelock Consolidated School and after moving to Bode, the Bode Country School and Bode High School, graduating in 1950. He attended Hamilton School of Commerce in Mason City and then was drafted into the United States Army in 1954. He earned the rank of PFC-T and was discharged in 1956. During his service he was stationed in Tokyo, Japan where he worked as a postal clerk. After separating from the service in May 1956, Darvin returned to Iowa where he wasted no time and married Betty Kirchner of Manly, Iowa in August 1956. Darvin then attended Luther College in Decorah, graduating with a B.A. in Accounting in 1959.Darvin worked as an accountant in the accounting firm of Adolf Hayes of Decorah, and in 1963 purchased the business with John Nelson of Decorah to form the partnership of Hacker & Nelson, CPAs.

Darvin was active in this business from 1963 through 2004, when he retired after 41 years.Darvin’s first wife Betty passed away in January 1995, and Darvin married Norma Anderson Hacker in May 1996. Together they lived on Rosa Drive and later Serenity Drive before moving into assisted living at Wellington Place in Decorah. They also owned a home in Bonita Springs, Fla. Darvin belonged to the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants and the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Decorah all of his adult life and served as president of the congregation for a year in the early 1970s, he was also the church Treasurer for some years. Darvin was an active member of the Rotary Club, where he was past president and Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. He was also the business manager and audio technician for the Decorah Nordic Dancers, and toured Norway with the troupe in 1977.Darvin loved fishing, and often went on fishing trips with friends and family to northern Minnesota and Ontario, Canada.

Darvin also loved camping and took road trips all over the western United States with his family to camp and fish. Darvin also enjoyed boating and water skiing on the Mississippi River. He played bridge with several Decorah bridge clubs and was a member of the Oneota Country Club all his adult life where he played golf and socialized with friends.

Darvin is survived by his wife Norma Anderson Hacker, daughter Karen Hacker Kinnett of Shepherdstown, WV, her husband Doug Kinnett, son Mike Hacker of Rochester, Minn.; son Jack and Corinne Whalen of Indianola; stepson Eric Anderson of Duncombe; stepdaughters Barbara Bacon of Green Bay, Wis., and Betsy Imhoff of Decorah; grandchildren: Dylan Kinnett, Jake and Alex Imhoff, Jeffrey, Jason and Matt Caquelin, Jenny Coonan and Virginia Bodus; great grandchildren: Memphis Imhoff, Kennedy and Madison Bodus, Sydney, Taryn and Brooke Caquelin, Akaela, Laynee and Teagan Caquelin.

Darvin was preceded in death by his parents, Chris and Gurina Hacker of Havelock, Iowa, brothers Fred, Virgil, Richard, Donald, and sisters Helen Peebles and Marian Iverson, and his first wife, Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Hacker.
