Carol Stoen

Carol Stoen, 74, of Decorah, died Friday, Sept. 18, 2015, at her home. Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 24, at Big Canoe Lutheran Church in Decorah, with Rev. Kurt M. Bockoven officiating. Accompanist was Kathryn Thompson. Hymns were “Amazing Grac,” “Beautiful Savior” and “How Great Thou Art.” Burial was at Big Canoe Cemetery. Casket bearers were Carol’s grandchildren. Arrangements were handled by Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah.

Carol Marie (Nelson) Stoen was born Oct. 1, 1940, the daughter of Edgar and Lenora (Tangen) Nelson. Carol graduated from Decorah High School in 1959. Carol married Darrel Stoen Sept. 2, 1961, at Big Canoe Lutheran Church near Highlandville. When Carol was first married she worked at Dr. Burg’s orthodontist office in Decorah. She was a stay-at-home mom while her children were growing up. Carol later went to work at the Super 8 Motel in Decorah and then worked at Walmart until retiring in 2003.  Carol enjoyed doing word searches, playing the piano, watching game shows and court TV. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also loved her grand-dogs, Lucky, Brody and Kida. Carol was a longtime member at Big Canoe Lutheran Church.

Carol is survived by her husband, Darrel Stoen, Decorah; four children: Wendy (Donald) Perkinson, Princeville, Ill.; Ricky (Taka Takaya) Stoen, Urbandale; Cindy (Scott) Green, Boulder, Colo.; Kimberly (Bryan) Avitt, Knoxville; six grandchildren: Kelsey, Kirsten and Kristina Perkinson; Emily and Rachel Green; Jacob Avitt; sister, Lorna (Chester) Thune, Waukon; brothers-in-law, Harold (Celia) Stoen, Highlandville and Ronald (Ann) Stoen, Des Moines; along with many nieces and nephews.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Lenora (Tangen) Nelson; and brother-in-law, William, in infancy.
