Beverly A. Schuman, 87, of Decorah, died Tuesday morning, March 10, 2015, at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 14, at First United Methodist Church in Decorah, with the Rev. Jim Dale and Rev. Laura Arnold officiating. Burial is in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah later this spring. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 1,3 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, and Saturday beginning at 10 a.m., one hour before the service, at First United Methodist Church. Organist was Marcia Engebretson. Soloist was Ann Rigdon (“Amazing Grace” and “On the Wings of a Snow White Dove”). Congregational hymns were “Hymn of Promise” and “In the Garden.” Casket bearers were Blaine Bader, Boyd Bader, Clark Bader, Dennis Bader, Lee Bader and Davis Johnson. Interment was at Phelps Cemetery, Decorah. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions are given to Aase Haugen Senior Services, 4 Ohio Street, Decorah, Iowa 52101, WMC Hospice, 901 Montgomery Street, Decorah, IA 52101 or First United Methodist Church, 302 West Broadway Street, Decorah, IA 52101. Beverly “Bev” Ann (Bader) Schuman was born June 21, 1927, in Waterloo, the daughter of John and Anna (Cherveny) Bader. She grew up in the La Porte City, area and graduated from La Porte City High School in 1943, at the age of 15. Bev was united in marriage to William Richard “Dick” Schuman May 1, 1947, at the Methodist Church in Independence. This union was blessed with two children, Bruce and Rebecca. Dick and Bev relocated many times during the early years of their marriage and weathered the many changes together. They would have celebrated 68 years of marriage May 1, 2015. They shared a love of traveling and took many vacations together, including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany and Italy. In addition to traveling, Bev enjoyed baking (especially known for baking fudge and peanut butter bon bons), collecting bears and volunteering. She volunteered at First United Methodist Church, Wellington Place, VFW, American Legion, Winneshiek Medical Center and Vesterheim. She also was a member of the Red Hat Society. Bev loved spending time with her family. She especially looked forward to the annual Bader Father’s Day reunion. Bev always went the extra mile to make her grandchildren and great-grandchildren feel loved and she left them with many special memories. Bev always had a positive attitude, even as she was fighting cancer. Bev became a resident of Aase Haugen Senior Services Jan. 7, 2015.
Bev is survived by her husband Dick; one son, Bruce (Betty) Schuman of Decorah; three grandchildren: Jarod (Rachel) Schuman of Decorah, Jeff (Heather) Schuman of River Falls, Wis. and Joelle (Jared) Nielsen of Decorah; five great-grandchildren: Kennadi, Kelbi, and Kooper Schuman, Aliya Schuman, and Maci Nielsen; and by one brother, Don (Minnie) Bader of Reno, Nev.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Rebecca Schuman, Nov. 1, 2006; one sister, Belva Ackerman; and two brothers, Paul and Curtis Bader.
Bev’s family would like to give special thanks for the loving care she received from the staff at Aase Haugen Home and the staff of Winneshiek Medical Center Hospice.
