Join Winneshiek County Conservation staff at Walden Pond for trail exploration and enjoyment of the outdoors on Saturday, June 29, from 9 a.m. to noon, and again on Sunday, July 7, from 1 to 4 p.m.
All ages are welcome for this free, self-guided morning!
New in 2024: Due to repair work, fishing is not recommended at Walden Pond this summer. Instead, each Open Park Day will feature a free & fun family-friendly activity for all park-goers to try if they wish. The activity for June 29 is a “Bird-Watching Blitz” scavenger hunt and the activity for July 7 is “Art in the Park”– bring your own supplies and find your inspiration at the park.

Walden Pond is located at 1432 130th Ave. Castalia, IA 52133. Restrooms are available near the enclosed shelter downhill from the parking lot. If you choose to bring your pets to the park, please clean up after them and keep them on a leash.
Walden Pond, dedicated as the Roy and Genevieve Schultz Memorial Outdoor Discovery Area, was donated by the Schultz family, who still live near the park, with the intent to conserve the area and provide a space for environmental education.
Walden Pond is a reservation-only park, specifically designated for educational programs and not always open to the public; however, Winneshiek County Conservation hosts several Open Park Days throughout the summer for visitors to explore the park. For information on future Open Park Days, visit www.winneshiekwild.com or call Winneshiek County Conservation at (563) 534-7145.
