Luther’s Brandt West Hall students relocated

Advanced Environmental reported to Luther that ceiling acoustical treatment in Brandt West contains encapsulated asbestos-containing materials.

A severe cold spell caused a water pipe to break Tuesday, Dec. 27, in the west wing of Luther College’s Brandt Hall. In response, Luther hired licensed environmental testing and abatement company Advanced Environmental to help develop plans for damage assessment, cleaning and repairs.
Advanced Environmental reported to Luther that ceiling acoustical treatment in Brandt West contains encapsulated asbestos-containing materials. The water damage to the ceilings in portions of the west wing introduced some risk that the encapsulation may fail. Consequently, Brandt West was isolated from the remainder of the building through a combination of sealed barriers and the application of negative air pressure.
All of the approximately 120 residents of Brandt West were relocated across Luther campus, keeping roommates and hallmates together as much as possible. Brandt does not use forced air circulation for heating, and Advanced Environmental determined it is safe for students to live in Brandt Center and Brandt East.
