‘Get to Know Carlson Park’ at Community Day May 4

Decorah Rotary Club and the Carlson Park Trail Development Team invite the public to a “Get to Know Carlson Park” Community Day on Saturday, May 4 from 1-3 p.m..

Event organizers said the landscape in and near Carlson Park has changed a lot over the past few months, and the groups are excited to show it off. Most notably, the improvements include the Decorah Rotary Club Binzebo Trailhead built by volunteers at Carlson Park, and Decorah’s oldest paved path is also being updated at Miller Park, adjacent to Carlson Park.
Decorah Rotary Club members will serve ice cream and hot dogs from the binzebo throughout the event, and individuals and families are welcome to explore Carlson Park on their own on foot or on bicycle.

Guided hike planned

A guided hike of Carlson Park’s two-mile original core loop will start at 1:30 p.m. from the binzebo area, and trail development team members will be on hand to answer questions and share plans for future development at Carlson Park. Decorah Rocks members have been painting and gathering rocks for the event, and participants are encouraged to look for rocks throughout the day. Rocks can be kept or hidden again.

Carlson Park is a 115-acre park sitting on Siewers Spring Road, with parking the St. Benedict’s Catholic Cemetery. Donated by the Rick and David Carlson families in 2016, Carlson Park is one of the newest parks in Decorah and is in the early stages of development. The current park includes options for hiking, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Attendees are encouraged to use care when walking from the parking lot to the binzebo, as it is along an active roadway and construction equipment may still be near the Miller Park area.
