Wieseler optimistic about her District 4 Supervisor candidacy

The former educator of more than 25 years and co-owner of Cluck Ewe Farm and Bakery of Decorah hosted a public presentation Sunday afternoon — giving potential constituents an opportunity to meet her and get to know her politics.

Community Action excited to take ownership of Smith Building

Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation has rented office space in the Smith Building — Decorah’s old hospital on the corner of Montgomery and East Broadway streets — for the last 22 years. On Sept. 3, the nonprofit organization will officially buy the 15,000-square-foot, 110-year-old historic building from Winneshiek County for just $1. And, NEICAC Chief Executive Officer Trisha Wilkins said the agency is looking forward to the purchase.

County supervisors delay recommendation on proposed biodigester to Iowa DNR

The Winneshiek County Board of Supervisors gave itself approximately a week to decide whether to recommend the construction of a proposed biodigester facility in rural Ridgeway to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The board took no action on the matter during Monday’s meeting, and the project will automatically be considered approved if the board makes no decision early next month.

To protect and serve: Guardians of Northeast Iowa moves to Decorah

Nearly 23,000 disabled or otherwise impaired adults are under guardianship and conservatorship in Iowa, but only five organizations are available to help them. Guardians of Northeast Iowa is one of those agencies, and last week, the 501c3 nonprofit moved from Calmar to Suite 5 at 110 Washington St., Decorah, so it can better accomplish its mission of protecting and serving the state’s most vulnerable residents.

The people of Castalia had a city celebration last year, for the first time since the COVID-19 Pandemic. Dubbed the “Castalia Revival,” the event featured live music, a car and tractor show, a UTV parade and more. This year’s celebration, which will be held Aug. 31, will also feature the magic and adult comedy of Nathan Tricky Allen, who once lived in Frankville.

Supervisors approve rezoning for biodigester 3-2, after turbulent public hearing

“The construction of the biodigester is not what the rezoning is (for),” Steines said before the public hearing began. “This board’s action, today, won’t approve or prohibit the construction of that digester. This board is deciding, if the digester is built, whether they can refine the gasses that are put out by the digester at this location. That’s what the zoning is for — the processing and refining of gasses.”
