Leaf collection starts Oct. 21

The City of Decorah will begin curbside collection of leaves on Monday, October 21.

Historic renovation under way at former Burr Oak Mercantile

The former Burr Oak Mercantile building in the center of town was recently gifted to the museum. The museum’s board and volunteers expect plenty of time-consuming, costly renovation work lies ahead, as they prepare the building to house the museum’s offices and gift shop.

Tree Planting Bike Ride planned here Oct. 20

A unique event is being organized Sunday, Oct. 20, in Decorah. Organizers invite youngsters and families to meet at Miller Park in the Minowa Heights subdivision in south Decorah at 1 p.m. to bike and plant trees along the Trout Run Trail.

Sheriff’s Office confirms fatal crash of tractor and train

A Fort Atkinson man has died following a tractor versus train accident in southern Winneshiek County. The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office received a call at approximately 2:32 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, advising of the accident at the intersection of Highway 24 and 128th Street between Fort Atkinson and Jackson Junction.

DHS students earn College Board honors

Keeping kids in classroom is goal for new absenteeism laws

The new state law requires districts to identify students who have missed 10 percent of a given grading period. If a student reaches that 10 percent mark, the district is then required to report the absences to the Winneshiek County Attorney’s office, and families are to be notified of the issue via certified mail.

Decorah High School recognized as 2024 National Blue Ribbon School

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona recently announced Decorah High School is among 356 schools nationwide which have been recognized as 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools. The recognition highlights schools which excel in academic performance or make significant strides in closing achievement gaps among different student groups.

DHS seniors named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists

Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®) recently announced the names of more than 16,000 Semifinalists in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Three Decorah High School seniors, Oliver Brummel, Mason Myers, and Jack Sovern, are among those recognized with the distinction.
