Prescribed burns slated this spring in Driftless area

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources plans to conduct prescribed burns this spring in the Driftless area. Locally, burns will occur throughout four of the counties managed by the DNR Upper Iowa Wildlife Unit, including burns in Winneshiek, Allamakee, Fayette, and Howard Counties.

 

Luther celebrates 25th anniversary of ‘The Straight Story’ in April

Luther College’s Center for Ethics and Public Engagement (The CEPE) will celebrate the 25th anniversary of David Lynch’s “The Straight Story,” with a free screening and discussion with one of the film’s stars in early April. The film is based on the true story of Alvin Straight from the Iowa community of Laurens, who rode his lawn mower tractor across the state and part of Wisconsin to reunite with his estranged brother.

Northern Lights to present ‘Weep No More’ April 21

The Northern Lights Women’s Chorus will present its spring concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at Decorah Lutheran Church. The 48-member ensemble, composed of singers from Decorah and surrounding communities, will perform a variety of beautiful choral music with the theme “Weep No More.

Luther celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage

Luther College will celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) heritage and contributions in April with a series of lectures, as well as performances and a fashion show put on by Luther students. The college will host a residency for a Chinese musician, calligrapher and martial artist. While May is widely recognized as the national AAPI month, Luther will celebrate in April.

St. Benedict School was represented by 41 sixth-eighth grade students to the regional National History Day (NHD) competition on Tuesday, March 19, at Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), and many of those students advanced to the state contest.

Driftless area native named to Luther position

Patti (Schroeder) Hetrick, a former area native from Minneapolis, was named the vice president for finance and administration at Luther College. The announcement was made recently by Luther President Jenifer K. Ward.

‘Biking Field Trips’ start April 10

Decorah Public Library (DPL) has announced a collaborative initiative with UpperExplorerland’s Biking School Bus and Winneshiek County Conservation: Biking Field Trips. Geared towards 4th-7th graders, this six-week program offers a unique opportunity for outdoor exploration and physical activity.

Area students attend state solo and ensemble music fest

Decorah High School Music Department participated in the Iowa High School Music Association State Solo and Small Ensemble Music Festival on Saturday, March 23, at Clear Lake High School. Other schools participating include Algona High School, Charles City High School, Clear Lake High School, Crestwood High School, Forest City High School, Hampton-Dumont High School, Humboldt High School, and Waverly-Shell Rock High School.
